Imagine there's a story of an abandoned space being hunted by an unknown terror. Sounds pretty original right? No? Not an original concept, but it looks like a horror lover's wet dream. Plus this is coming from the big man himself, George R.R. Martin.
Nightflyers comes straight from the mind of a man (well the book anyways we've all grown to love through his Game of Thrones series. Granted most (including myself) let him into our hearts through the HBO show rather than the books, but then he of course ripped them out. Perhaps the grossest offence being we have to wait until 2019 for the final season (grrr..)
This is America's biggest dick tease. Look into his eyes and find a change of pants.
While we wait for the glorious return of his life's work, GRRM has found it fit to placate us with a television adaptation of his 1980 novella Nightflyers. A film version was attempted in 1987, but now the task comes to SyFy. SyFy isn't your daddy's SyFy where Sharknado somehow was entertainment. Yet, they climbed out of the proverbial gutter and gave the world a wonderful adaptation of James Corey's novel The Expanse. If you haven't seen it, you should.
Now, where was I? Oh yes, Nightflyers. GRRM describes the book as a "haunted house in space." It's a common trope, but not tired. The plot follows a group of scientists who are searching the depths of space for a strange group of beings known only as the Volcryn. Naturally, everything goes south from there on out. To make the story even more exciting, the ship has "powers." I guess you could say it it's almost like a HAL 9000, but we'll have to tune to find out I guess.
Take a peek at the trailer. Gave me the chills:
Comes out this fall. We'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed SyFy can deliver the magic.
